Calling all SkiMo enthusiasts!
Eliel Bureau-Lafontaine will be leading a Ski Mountaineering trip during which 3-7 participants will have a chance to learn and apply a variety of skills required in most ski mountaineering objectives. Participants will have the opportunity to take on the lead of being challenged to their level of comfort under the supervision of a certified ACMG Ski Guide (Eliel).
The trip will take place in Kluane National Park, flying in to Cathedral Glacier or North Kaskawulsh/Eclipse Glasher, with options to summit peaks like Mount Donjek, Mount Badham, Mount Kennedy and/or Mount Hubbard.
Prerequisite experience
Participants should have at least two years of backcountry skiing, as well as some winter camping experience. A basic knowledge of rope skills will also be required, and preferable knowledge and skills regarding crevasse rescue. There will also be an opportunity to attend a Crevasse rescue and glacier travel course prior to the trip.
Skills covered during the trip
During the trip participants will learn and/or practice skills related to:
- Crevasse rescue
- glacier travel
- mountain navigation
- route planning
- winter camping
- hazard analysis and mitigation strategies
- winter food planning and cooking
Food planning
Participants will take part of food planning in groups of 3 or 4. Instructions will be given during pre-trip meetings.
Transportation
Whitehorse to Silver City: Car pooling with personal vehicles
Silver City to Eclipse glacier: Icefield Discovery Air charter
Total Cost per Participant
Approximately $1500-1700 (more accurate costing will follow the pre-trip meeting)
Insurance
TUGO/Global Rescue offer evacuation insurance for mountain expeditions. Participants will be responsible for providing their own insurance for the trip.
